Departure Herald is a 26 meter long panoramic painting depicting the Xuande Emperor (1425-1435) traveling with his escort from the Forbidden City in Beijing to the Ming tombs outside of the city to perform ancestor worship rites.

The extensive imperial entourage included courtiers, attendants, soldiers, horsemen, and, as a display of the far-reaching power and influence of the Ming state, elephants imported from vassal states in Southeast Asia.
