Madara light blue bowl

Out of stock
This stoneware bowl is made of high-iron clay, fired in a kiln with a reducing atmosphere. The kiln is adjusted so the atmosphere is starved of oxygen, causing the flames to seek out the oxides in the clay, bringing out the iron speckles in the glaze. Madara is Japanese for 'speckled'.

The glaze is composed of crushed rocks: feldspar, quartz, and a small amount of cobalt to produce the blue color.

Stoneware is naturally very durable and is dishwasher- and microwave-safe.

Each bowl is hand-formed and hand-glazed so there will be slight variation in size, shape, and appearance, in keeping with the Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi, beauty in imperfection.
